Forest Deer

The deer is a very interesting and an agile mammal that has fascinated humans since time immemorial. The earliest mention can be found even in the cave drawings of the palaeolithic era. The deer is appreciated and admired for its aesthetic beauty. They roam freely in open habitats such as meadows and clearcuts for fodder, retreating to more secure areas, such as thickets and closed canopy forests, to rest and chew their cud.

Deer spotting is an established sport and avid deer watchers can spend hours just looking at the herds of deer. Hunting is also permissible in some areas of some countries.

The deer family possess a unique characteristic, which is their antlers. While horns remain permanently affixed to the skull, antlers are shed every year. The deer may be active at any time of day, however, they are most active near dawn and dusk.

The painting depicts a herd of deer in the calmness of a deciduous forest at dusk in search of fodder. The inspiration for this painting was from my trip to the US where one would chance spotting a deer in the many forests that we had driven through.
